News & Events

If you have a child, grandchild, or other close relative who is graduating from high school, college, or professional school soon, we’d like to invite you to forward us their names so we may include them on our annual graduation list that will be published in the next newsletter. If desired, please feel free to also include your student’s future academic or career plans. The deadline for inclusion is Thursday, May 23. Please contact Mary Grider in the office or email her at: mgrider@cooketech.net

St. James will host a blood drive on Tuesday, May 28 from 3 - 7 PM in the Community Room. Sign up sheets will be available soon, but walk-ins are always welcome. Donors must be 17 years of age or older; donors as young as 16 years old may donate with a signed parental consent form.

Our annual summer sack lunch program begins on June 3rd and will run for twelve weeks, ending on August 23rd. As in the past, we are asking members of our congregation for their support in this program. If you can give your time please sign up on our sheets in the Connection Commons. Any help given will be appreciated. The co-chairs of this year’s program are Winnie Beers and JoAnn Swires.

On Wednesday evening the end-of-year music appreciation dinner will be held at the home of Gary and Dorothy Lickfett. All those who plan to attend are asked to contact our music director, Mark Lindvahl.

We’d like to draw your attention to the next newsletter which will be mailed to homes next Friday, May 24. The lead article summarizes the thoughts and suggestions of the Vision Team and focuses on both the opportunities and challenges that lie in St. James’ future. The suggestions made by the team were unanimously adopted by the Church Council last month. We would encourage you to read the article and invite your comments.

The next Haworth Concert will be held on Sunday, June 9, at 3:00 PM. Our guest is Adam Larson, a saxophonist and rising star in the world of jazz music whose debut album Simple Beauty released in January 2013 earned praise from newspaper critics at the New York Times and Chicago Tribune. Mr. Larson, who hails from Bloomington, IL, will perform with his jazz group that consists of a vocalist, guitarist, and drummer. The concert is free and open to the public.

Cheryl Clapp and Carol Olson are hosting a women’s Bible study this summer that will meet for eight weeks on Tuesday mornings from 10-11:30 AM beginning on June 4. The study will focus on the Book of John. The meetings will be held at Cheryl’s house and a sign up sheet is available at the welcome center in the connection commons. Participants are asked to bring their Bibles to the study group.

On Wednesday, June 12, a representative from the American Heart Association will hold a CPR certification class at St. James from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. This CPR class will cover techniques used for adults, children, and infants and will also include instruction on how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator). The cost of the class is $20 and you may sign up at the welcome center in the connection commons. (Fees will be collected that evening.)

Help Support the Youth Mission Trip!

On June 8, 2013 the Youth Ministry will be holding a Golf Outing at the Danville Country Club to benefit the annual Youth Mission Trip. All proceeds will go to the upcoming and future mission trips. I would like to ask the St. James and Danville communities to support our youth in two ways:

The first is by playing in the event itself. Golf will start at 1:15pm, with registration from 11:00am – 12:00pm. Lunch will be served at 12:00pm Noon. The fee for the event is $75.00 per player which includes green fees, cart, and lunch. Prizes include: $10,000 Hole-In-One, Closest to the Hole – Longest Drive, Team Low Gross and Low Net Skins. The outing will be a Scramble format with 4-person teams. If you do not enter a team list you will be placed with other single entry participants.

The second in supporting the youth is by considering sponsoring a hole/tee at the event. This sponsorship can be done by business or families. All sponsors will have their business/family name on a sign at a hole/tee, and will be acknowledged during the Luncheon following the event. Sponsorships can be split between two families. Sponsorships are $500 Gold Level, $250 Silver Level, and $100 Bronze Level. Sponsorships are the backbone of making the event a success so please consider this opportunity!

Both Golf Outing Entry Forms and Hole/Tee Sponsorship Forms are available on the following links:

The entire St. James Youth Ministry thanks you for your support!!!
